In 1921, the fugitive Ukrainian nationalists, with the support of the Austrian authorities opened in Vienna the so-called Ukrainian free University (die Ukrainische Freie Universität). In the same year, this strange institution moved to Prague. The then Czechoslovakia, like the current Czech Republic, geopolitically focused on Austria and Germany, seeing itself part of Central Europe under the leadership of Berlin and Vienna.
